If you’ve ever had to deal with gophers, you’ll know that these backyard critters are some of the most difficult to deal with for the average yard owner. Their elusiveness is only matched by their destructiveness. Gophers will dig vast underground tunnel networks in their never-ending search for food, causing massive damage to fields, lawns, and gardens. There is hope, however, for those seeking ways to deal with these unwanted guests.
Here are a couple of effective measures for you to try out.
Using Traps
Traps are widely considered to be the most effective method of gopher control due to their rate of effectiveness and minimal environmental impact. Simply purchase your average hardware store gopher trap and you should be all set.
You’ll need to identify where the gopher tunnels are located using a screwdriver or metal rod (poke it into their mounds to find them). Once you’ve found a tunnel, open it up with a small shovel or trowel, being sure to open it up as far as you can and getting the loose soil out from the openings.
Take your traps and install them in the tunnels, being sure to cover both openings fully. Go on to cover up the traps and place a marking where you’ve placed them so you know where to find them later.
Within a day or so, you should come back to find your gophers well and truly done for in the traps. Remove the trap and repeat until you’re satisfied that you’re gopher-free.
Using Poisons
If you feel more drastic measures are called for, then poisons might be the answer for you. You can get effective gopher poisons at most outdoor, hardware, and gardening outlets. Simply locate the tunnels using the procedure we’ve mentioned above, uncover them, and place the indicated number of pellets inside. Cover up the hole and wait. Well placed poison pellets should be effective within a day of being placed.
Take note that the poison method is not recommended for those with pets as they may accidentally consume them instead of the intended targets.
